Digital removed the studio incentive to support discount theaters.
The way it works is Studios take like 90 percent of the opening weekend box office and the studio take declines every week. By week 8 it's down to something like 20 percent, so if you're a discount theater you make the same or more revenue selling tickets for $2 as Cinemark does for $8 and all the profit is in popcorn anyway.
Now, the movie is available to stream within eight weeks and the studio gets a higher cut from online rentals.
The theaters that will do well are all going to be high end, so a night out at the movie costs $150 with drinks and food. Going to iPic is not remotely similar to going to a regular theater.
I don't know what the hell you do with a 32-screen multiplex. |

3. Rise of niche movies (this is a good thing in many ways). Makes it so more people can find lower budget movies tailored to them. But gone are the days when every single American knows the plot of Indiana Jones, etc.

When I was in high school, we did NOT "go to the movies" with any kind of frequency, it just didn't fuckin' happen. I imagine it was the same for most poasters. Film was more relevant for boomers and early Xers and prior because it offered a decidedly superior form of entertainment compared to TV. Keep in mind that cable didn't even exist until the 80s, you did not have the "entertainment" options that we have today. Film persists to exist but the market is fragmented. More Films are being released (https://www.statista.com/statistics/187122/movie-releases-in-north-america-since-2001/) and no one cares about most of them.
