If you are not artistically obsessed with coding such that you do it purely as a hobby in your free time, you shouldnt bother learning it.

I suppose you think some exlawyer pumo is gonna get a plum Google job (just magically get past the resume/recruiter bar with no experience or even coding projects) that hires only with algo interviews then will put him on some useless team where no one will notice he sucks/can't do anything then in year 2 he might start contributing

no, he could get a job below median salary at a startup as a junior where theyll give him time to learn. that is how everyone breaks in. even ppl coming right out of school need a significant amount of time to scale up if they werent already familiarized with the code base via internships.

i know youre about to suggest he do open source, which us really bad advice imo bc theres no way he'll be able to come to grips with everything on his own as a noob

yeah just be a nontrad JD/BA candidate whose only programming experience is trying to game the interview process, sounds like the WORST possible candidate for a random startup

I guess he'll just have to find the one random employer in his city that won't ask a single screening call question about javascript or give him a take home project or a simulated bug fix/feature problem on a codebase

open source is great in theory but it's some chicken and egg shit, people who can do that stuff are never novices looking for jobs

(guy who has never worked at a startup)

startups are the only places that will look past a bizarre/lack of resume. f500 will trash it and hire pradeed with their stack of h1b visas. startups have to get creative with hiring sometimes. and who said he shouldnt learn javascript? I just described exactly how I broke into the industry. you havent actually given any suggestion here btw

you probably had some other reasons why you were a compelling candidate or it was years ago before we reached peak coding meme

he should do leetcode but only after or in parallel with going through a full stack web dev curriculum or two and knocking out some original projects that don't look like shit. every job gets like 100 applications from people with a todo list and something using the Pokemon API and I don't think "lawyer who leetcodes" looks any better than that on paper

Try C. It doesn't "do things" for you so its harder to think through problems with it, but because the language is minimal it's pretty easy to learn all the operators.

Standard library is also small and MOSTLY consistent (some weird exceptions like strncpy() doesn't work quite like one would assume), so learning the built-in functions isn't too bad.

I really liked Sams Teach Yourself C. There are a lot of mistakes/it doesn't necessarily focus on the standard or portability, but it's 95% right and very approachable.

C is not a popular language anymore, at least among modern tech companies. There are a few industries that still use it, but you're better off learning something more practical unless you're doing it as a sort of academic exercise.

Already learning Rust, because the idea of a fast memory-safe language sounds awesome, but it hasn't come close to replacing C. The number of production codebases you can work on in Rust are... very few.

Ljl the TIOBE is based on search data and not job data or industry data or anything else. It tells you nothing about real-world usage or the job market.

Bravo. You've found a reason to give this piece of evidence less weight. However, seeing as how you've provided no evidence whatsoever...

Maybe we can see what gaming systems at Best Buy are still posted as available. Those must be the most popular ones, right?

You seriously just claimed that the junk positions that have to be posted on random internet job boards are an indicator of best/most popular programming language.

You're subhumanly idiotic and I won't engage with you again. Goodbye.

you're not even gonna learn enough in a book like that to be a C programmer, that worry is irrelevant

and JavaScript and Java mostly look like that (you're talking about sub 50 line toy programs doing basic algorithms and i/o)

The memory allocation and garbage collection in C make it not so simple actually. Basic Java or C# are best to start with.

yes you have to do all that yourself. which is what makes it not so simple. java takes cares of all that for you, which is why most college level intro courses teach java.

techlead says the only skill you need to code is the ability to sit at a desk/computer for long periods of time, which if you're a lawyer you should be able to do. he's correct.

but my god why do you want to be a programmer?

If you can score 1300 or better on your SAT you can learn to code.

The problem is pedagogy. I didn’t like coding the first time I tried (required as part of a math degree) but it was presented differently when I got my MS in CS elsewhere and had to start from 100 level classes.

I am currently doing Udemy courses re js, node and react taught by this guy Andrew mead (mead.io). His courses are really good but I always leave them realizing I still don’t know squat

i am trying to find some 'projects' to do to build on the stuff i am learning in the udemy courses but idk i dont feel like creating a background refreshing button for the DOM. so i'm pushing myself to see how stuff like JS and python are used to implement things like blockchain (see link)

i have wasted so much money this week. i mean i have some but i have signed up for teamtreehouse, codeacademy, paid $50 for two rando JS courses that kinda blow, tried out 3 or 4 other "we'll teach u to code!" non-pay sites, five udemy courses at $10 apiece (tbf they have been the best things i have singed up for)... i hit the same roadblock which is i go through the course and am like "okay, so this is how arrow functions work in JS/ES6; okay this is how arrays work in JS; okay, this is how you create classes in JS/ES6...." ... and then when i am done at the end of the day i'm like "holy shit i dont know jack about JS"

i wish there was a course that had a guy like one of the two udemy instructors who i like who would walk me through like 20 different projects of escalating difficulty in JS and for each project it included minor homework projects that helped solidify the ideas and methods in each of the 20 projects

Are you able to get interviews?

Why don't you just study DS&A?

Also don't be discouraged if you don't understand some autistic dude's blockchain demo. I work @ FAANG and I'm sure it would go over my head

Former big lawyer with enough of a resume gap that I don’t want to deal with the the pain of interviews so seeking a new career. Don’t need a faang job or anything. Just need enough skill to be semi employable to some extent at even the most shitty company so I have something to do with myself rather than sit around scratching my balls. I’d take a 40-50k a year job not flame.
