Airlines took over that transportation, and they lobby constantly against rail. So does the auto lobby and the construction lobby.

Industrial use of railroads was on the decline, but is now doing gangbusters.

Early on there were too many mom and pop railroads. If a big customer went out of business, so did the railroad. That led to consolidation but it was of many different, and disorganized rail lines.

Next came the national highways that are funded by a small gas tax. Meanwhile the railroads are private infrastructure. Truckers have lower overhead and can do first and last mile much smoother.

Coal saved the industry for a long time. It was like minting money for the railroads. Even with a decline in coal, things have turned around with consolidation of rail lines to make service more efficient. Also have used technology better than trucking.

When I backpacked through Europe during Winter Break 1994-1995 while studying abroad in England my "junior" year in undergrad, I traveled with seven other Americans and we all had Euro-Rail passes (I forget what it was actually called.) It was like $2,000 for a pass, and it gave you unlimited train rides throughout Europe.

I planned out the entire trip, which cities we were staying in and for how long. Everyone unquestioningly just gave me the authority to plan this trip so I did.

I made sure we went skiing in Switzerland which was my childhood dream. I found the largest mountain to ski on in Switzerland, Jungfrau, and booked us 3-day passes. One of the most 180 times in my life. My buddy and I bought a bottle of Jagermeister and drank it on the gondola rides up. One day we just lay in the snow at the top of the mountain, on our backs, sipping Jaeger. Anyway, about the trains.

The train from Italy to Sicily was an overnight trip and the train literally sat on a ferry as it crossed. Each train in Europe had these cabins with their own sliding doors. One long padded bench on either side of the cabin.

I woke up on the train in Sicily the next morning and found my fanny pack was sliced with a knife. The band that went around my waist was sliced completely through and it was a clean cut so it was a sharp knife.

There was also a knife slit across the bottom of the pouch, again very clean.

I was sleeping on my stomach and he didn't get anything. My passport and all my money were in there. We learned, afterwards, that dudes will enter your cabin and "gas" you so you don't wake up and steal your shit.

So after that, whenever we had an overnight train ride, we would wrap a cord around the inside door handles so they couldn't be opened from the outside. As we were going through Germany, while we were sleeping, German guards with barking German Shepherds were banging on our door to open it up and let them inspect our documents and luggage. It was pretty intense. They were yelling at us in German, we were speaking back in English, no one understood anything, they were holding machine guns with dogs foaming at the mouth trying to get in.

So that's my train story.

I would think if they actually gassed me they would have been able to roll me over and take my fanny pack. Then again, he had to have rolled me over to slice the bottom of it.

It is inexcusable how shitty the Acela is, because there is actual demand for train travel on that route, the roads and airports in east coast cities are fucking horrible, we have route laid out already, and it is no further than the main high speed lines in any first world country (Japan, UK, Germany).

But passenger routes like NYC-Chicago just don't make sense. That is like Paris-Rome distance, and even with European trains that trip takes a long time and requires a connection. It is something you might do if you love trains, but no one is going to do it on a regular basis when you can fly or drive.

And then coast-to-coast is even crazier - like three days on a train. Even if you could cut it to one day, which would be incredibly hard/expensive, it would still suck to spend 24 hours on a train when you can fly in 6 hours.

It isn't. Air travel is better for overall efficiency and car travel is better for convenience and flexibility. rail only makes sense in very limited circumstances like going between cities that are close to each other. even then flying and/or driving is often a better alternative. lol at riding in a train between nyc/dc now when I95 is deserted.

Don't worry trainbros. Once Elon gets back from Mars, he will build out the Hyperloop at 750mph.

Because Americans have cars, and cars about as fast or faster than trains.

Notably, an entire family can go in 1 car - you'd have to pay for 2 train tickets.

Most importantly, if you travel by train, unless you're going DC to NYC, you're probably going to have to rent a car when you get to the destination. Why would you want to go through all of that hassle to transfer when you could just drive direct to your hotel? That's the big difference between the U.S. and Europe.

you're not factoring in stops & other delays that trains always face

Looks like Seoul to Busan is 2:15 by your super fast train (most are closer to 3 hours, 6 hours by normal train) and 4 hours driving.

So you save 1:45 at best on one of the longer routes. Factor in that you have to get yourself to the train station, get yourself from the train station to your final destination, and that the train leaves on the train's schedule - not yours, and at best it is a wash.

My bro and I were thinking about going to this big thrash metal extravaganza in San Francisco, but he couldn't fly, so we looked into taking a train.

We couldn't even go there directly from Chicago, it was like 40+ hours, and cost an arm and a leg.
