I lived in NYC for several years. Moved to Texas.
Taking q's. Hardest transition was having to re-learn how to drive and customer service on a lot of things is shittier (not that the attitude is bad, but the competence is low - NYC people were rude but they got their shit done). Everything else is so much better here, you guys should consider moving down here.

I live in Houston, it is extremely Hispanic (they aren't all from Mexico though).
It is easy to find highly white areas but there is a LOT of racemixing, particularly between White and Hispanic.
Haven't noticed coalburning, but never thought about it.
I suppose you can't get the baller salaries here like you could by being a PE/IBanking master in NYC but for 99.5% of people you probably won't notice.

Austin seems like the only place to be in Texas. Dallas - huge sprawl, no personality. Houston - very prole, oil and gas dying, humid as hell. Other cities - too small and mexican
Thoughts?

I love Houston area, specifically the suburbs. Cost of living great, can get a big house that is brand new. Lots of stay at home moms and swimming pools and parks - kid paradise.
I find Austin to be too expensive generally.
I do agree that hydrocarbons seem to be in a secular decline.

It's chill. Actually kind of beautiful and surprisingly green.
All the shit parts about striver culture skipped San Antonio. No one goes to San Antonio to get rich and famous.
Best metal scene in North America.

It’s got nothing to do with aggressive/defensive, so many people here are incapable of keeping all 4 wheels between one set of lane lines, run reds and stop signs constantly, think a flashing yellow left turn arrow = protected green arrow (as in, they are literally unaware there is a difference), jump across multiple highway lanes without signaling because they just realized they’re about to miss their exit, drive with unsecured shit in open trunks and pickup beds, have their high beams on always (some even during the daytime) and the list goes on.
if you live here too you either know what I’m talking about or you are one of these retards.
Oh, forgot to mention all the half-blind olds in their Lincolns who drive 20mph no matter where they are

I am an aggressive driver. My default highway speed is 90 around my city, faster out in the sticks. If the people in the faster lanes (highway or no) are dragging ass (which is often) I will tailgate the fuck out of them- and if needed zoom around them via the right lane if it's open. (But when I do that I'll signal for the benefit and safety of the people behind me, unlike most shitheads here.)
Bottom line, you should be able to tell the difference between another aggressive driver who knows what the fuck he's doing and a braindead retard with 0 situational awareness who behaves the same in a real vehicle as they do on the local go-kart track after 5 or 6 Lone Stars.
Texas drivers are overwhelmingly the latter.

Did I say "flashing," retard?
A large proportion of Texas drivers just turn their high beams on and leave them on, always.

I get the idea in general but where do you find yourself butting up against this?
Calling spectrum/att/whoever to deal with your home cable and internet?
Dealing w govt employees when doing your land/re work?
I lived in ny for a long time but can’t necessarily think of experiences that suggested some kind of universal conclusions about customer service in general.

I haven't noticed any rats.
Yes there is hurricane risk, but it's not that high and seems much lower than Florida. Hurricane Harvey was supposed to be a once in a lifetime event.
You can also live in parts of Texas that wouldn't have much hurricane risk.

No, the cockroaches are for real though.
And if you're 50 miles inland you're not losing your house, you just may be without power for a week.
Flooding is an increasing problem.

Left Texas bc it’s become awful
Never met any who genuinely “liked” Houston
Horrible weather virtually everywhere in the state. Summers make the state largely uninhabitable for months at a time.
It’s ugly and crowded. Concrete everywhere. Nothing to do but shop and eat. Huge parts are virtually 100% Hispanic/third world. It’s also changing politically and culturally as immigrants and ppl from blue states pour in (I mean OP is literally one of these ppl). The bigger cities don’t really feel like “Texas” anymore.

Midwest, went to college/law school in Northeast and lived and worked in Northeast.
Considered only Dallas and Houston for moving to. Found a job in Houston easily through a connection so stopped considering Dallas.
Never been to either Dallas or Houston as an adult prior to moving to Texas.

What are you thoughts on Houston vs. NYC for dating?
Also, what are your thoughts on the aesthetics of Houston, particularly the lack of zoning and the haphazard placement of houses next to industrial and commercial sites?
