Cooley posted its 11th straight year of revenue growth in 2020, with a 16.8% increase bringing the firm’s top line to $1.55 billion, three times the firm’s 2010 earnings.

Revenue per lawyer grew just under 10%, while profits per equity partner climbed by 25.4% to $3.18 million. The firm grew profits even as the ratio between equity and nonequity partners remained steady: the firm’s nonequity partnership, accounting for slightly less than one-third of Cooley’s 328 partners, was almost entirely unchanged from 2019.

Hogan Lovells’ diversified practice mix and geographic balance led to a 2.8% increase in gross revenue to $2.31 billion, while a change in the firm’s partner pay system helped its profits surge.

Profits per equity partner climbed by 30.8% in U.S. dollars to reach $1.97 million, a consequence of a focus on more efficient business practices, pandemic-related spending cuts and an adjustment to the firm’s compensation system that saw roughly 125 partners move from the firm’s equity to nonequity tier.

Baker & Hostetler chairman Paul Schmidt credits the firm’s decision to stick with the five-year plan it initiated at the start of 2020 as a key reason the Am Law 100 firm finished the year with healthy growth, boosting revenues by 7.8% to hit $789.4 million.

Baker & Hostetler financials“We were glad we had it,” said Schmidt, the Washington, D.C.-based leader of the firm for the past two years. “We actually relied very heavily on it to provide a road map to make progress in the midst of uncertainty. It allowed us to stay focused on priorities and make better advancement and cost-containment decisions.”
