If you're in a fire camp or a Level 1 yard I don't think it's necessary, but they've got a major presence on level 2 and above, according to Wes Watson.
My biggest fear would be having to carry out "work" that could end up extending my sentence. Wes Watson has a story about a dude who owed $500 or $800 for heroin and wasn't paying. Every day he'd promise that the money was coming, but it never did. A couple of gang members were assigned to shank him in order to send a message to all the other debtors in the prison. According to Wes, these dudes didn't have a choice; when the shot caller assigns you work, you do it. Carrying out their orders wound up costing them each a life sentence and an indefinite stay in the SHU (solitary). Turns out that it was entirely unnecessary, as the money hit the dead guy's account that very same day.
Apparently east coast prisons don't have anywhere near the same level of gang activity and segregation that west coast and maximum security federal prisons do. In those prisons, I wouldn't join a prison gang unless I absolutely had to. Even if I were in CA and needed to join one, I might choose protective custody like the sex offenders rather than expose myself to gang violence. |
