oh wow a glorified savings account that I can only use for "medical" purchases. basically "don't open until you're old and dying". also the account interfaces always have prole names like "PayFlex".

it's not that bad for familymos

you can withdraw any time but there's a tax penalty if under 65

you can invest it once you have more than ~5k iirc

There’s no penalty if you spend it on medical/health, which you eventually will do.

An HSA is triple tax advantaged, it's better than a 401k or IRA. And you can pull from it tax free for non-medical expenses after age 65 without penalty (just regular tax). The trick is to max HSA, pay medical expenses out of post tax money but save the scanned receipts so that you can withdraw whenever you need money later while it grows tax free. There's no rule against filing a receipt and withdrawing 20 years later.

Everything is gay. It's like 4k for singlemos but if you're saving that money for retirement anyway, why not do it in an extra tax advantaged account? 4k a year of pre-tax money growing tax free for 30 years makes a difference.

Yes that's sps. Welcum 2 America.

LJL @ this, just like with everything else on your tax return you only need backup if the IRS actually audits you, which is very unlikely. What's more, if you're filing for something from 20 years ago, just pick a medical practice you actually patronized that no longer exists and mock up your own receipt for whatever you need (they email you receipts anyway you can just edit and make your own). From the IRS's perspective this is petty cash, they're not going to go full Mulder on proving you didn't really get an expensive test 20 years ago. And even if they want to, what are they going to do, hunt down the medical receptionist from 20 years ago and have her reveal the secrets of their billing system?

No. Well, yes you can use it for anything, but that doesn't count as an eligible expense to make it tax free. Since you'll be over 65 there won't be an additional penalty, so you've benefited from a really long tax deferral and had growth on pretax money.
