They took a good, decent set of ideas--don't get fucked in the ass on fees; generally speaking, the average passive will outperform the average active, and the power of indices--and turned it into a mindless cult. They're becoming their own underperformance. I say this as someone with a significant portion of my portfolio in VITSX.

they also ignore another point -- more people will take an interest in investing if they feel like they are connected to their investments, and its easier to build that feeling with individual stocks. VTI set it and forget it is boring and doesn't engage proles.

For many things a bogleheads approach *is* credited. The problem is there are preconditions for it to work efficiently that most bogleheads don't understand or aren't aware of and that Jack Bogle wasn't interested in wasting his time with since at the time he was writing retail investors were getting fucked so badly. As a way of gaining exposure to US equity, it's not a bad idea to just go all in on VTI or, God forbid, do 80% VTI, 20% individual picks that you've done diligence on and have a conviction or thesis regarding. The approach begins to fall apart when you talk about things like REITs or Emerging, as we're discussing in another thread, because not all markets are equivalent to major US equity markets in terms of their market and information efficiencies, search costs, external risks--not all real estate is equally worthwhile and it isn't that hard to discern this e.g., the secular decline of malls over the past 20 years; you can't just treat international investing as a commoditized experience: "I'll take 5 units of international, please, thanks." Which, on the latter, is why you'll see bogleheads bitching about international underperformance on forums (which in turn leads many of them to just go all US, which is a foolish thing to take away as a lesson). That said, even in settings like those, it isn't unwarranted to just "set it and forget it" but you need to accept that the magical trade-off that Jack Bogle identified for what was at the time basically the S&P 500 won't necessarily obtain in alternative settings. Alternatively, you need to be willing to spend the time to do diligence and generate convictions; this isn't asking ordinary retail investors to do mathematical topology but it is expecting them to inform positions like "investing in South Africa is better than investing in Libya" or "Data Centers will represent a larger area of real estate growth opportunity than malls in the next decade" and to allocate money accordingly rather than just dumping it into a black hole.

Value and growth investing doesn’t need to come with hype whatsoever, and usually shouldn’t. There are plenty of wonderful small companies in overlooked sectors with extremely attractive prices and potential for growth. Don’t mistake memeing with active investing more generally

bogleheads is fine as a strategy but it would be a bit crazy to go all-in on one single strategy

i like to have part of my portfolio in VTI and equivalents (Boglehead), a chunk in actively-managed real estate (landlord stuff), and a chunk in hyper-speculative stuff like crypto (autoadmit strategy)
