The card doesn't give you any ip right and the company can produce as many of them as it wants. What is there that's special about the card outside of the confines of the card company?
The value of both are in the scarcity created by the producers. |

You're not paying for ownership of the highlight. You're paying for this falsely created thing of which the creator has an incentive to create a scarcity. |

When you buy a card, you are paying for ownership of the card. The value of the card comes from the scarcity of a limited production tangible item in a certain physical condition. It’s 1 of probably 100 in the world at this point. It’s no different than a rare Porsche. It has value both in and out of the trading card ecosystem.
A highlight is completely worthless outside of the topshot website. If TopShot goes bankrupt the owners have nothing.
I guess I just don’t get it. Seems really gay to me. |

You own the highlight, the stats on it and all that shit like you do a Topps card. Someone else can make that exact same topps card the same way someone can make this top shot token.
I think you're missing that it's not just the highlight video. It's a card, that exists on the internet, where the picture is a highlight clip.
Calling the top shot clip just the highlight clip is the same as calling the card just the picture printed out. There are limited releases of the top shot tokens in the same way there are limited sets in the card.
What exactly are you seeing as the difference here?
Side note, I agree on it seeming gay. But launch baseball cards now and tell me how it's any different? |
