Motorhead's 6th album, Another Perfect Day, is an underrated gem of a rock album

It's a very different sounding motörhead because they were playing with Brian "Robbo" Robertson, the guitarist from thin lizzy. This was Robbo's first and only record with the band and one wonders what the FUCK he was as doing there because he hated Motörhead's existing catalog so much he refused to play their old songs live and was kicked out of the band shortly after the record was released. But while he was there he forced them to become a lot more "musical" if that makes sense. Lemmy actually had to sing on this album. The result is something really odd and fantastic, a real treat not only for die hard motörhead fans but rock fans in general. Lemmy's Johnny Ramone-esque divebomber bass absolutely crashes into Robbo's reverbed out solos that sound like they were recorded for a different album. Philthy Taylor is there but you don't even notice him because the dissonance between Robbo and Lemmy is so overwhelming. What's ultimately hilarious about the whole affair is that at all times it sounds like Lemmy is being dadded around by the guitarist who he would ultimately fire for being too much of a contemptuous prick. Lemmy is 180 but he was always dependent on his more talented bandmates to carry him and this dood just wanted to stab him in the back. All of this is captured in the opening track, which I also think is maybe the best song on an album full of very good songs:

I think this video confirms a lot of suspicions about why this lineup failed. Many people consider Dancing on Your Grave to be the best song on the album, and Motorhead was known for being pretty consistently good live, but this performance is awful and the reason is because Robbo was not actually that great a guitarist, or at least he had no chemistry with Lemmy that would make it apparent if he was:

Rumors probably are true that Robbo did a million takes on all his solos on APD because he's not even trying to play those solos here. He's just squawking while Lemmy stands there bored as fuck barely keeping time. Philthy sounds incredible but he's playing his to his own beat. No one else is playing with him. It's amazing to think that he left Motörhead because he wanted to keep playing with Robbo. Anyway this is a band that did clearly did NOT have its shit together at the moment, yet they somehow produced this truly great album. It's not just a great album either, it's consistently great. You can let this one run on repeat. It's a Motörhead album so of course you can.
