Seems like it'd been a lot more useful at 96th street or below, especially at the time it was built. Was it all about leading a passage from NJ to New England?

Maybe the better question is why didn't Washington Heights prosper more from this corridor?

lolwut? why would an urban neighborhood "prosper" from having a smog-filled highway rammed through it?

Well Central Park goes to 125th. Geography may also be tricky on Jersey side (it’s cliffs). Apparently 57th street was first choice.

In May 1924, Colonel Frederick Stuart Greene, the New York Superintendent of Public Works, announced a plan to construct a suspension bridge between Fort Lee and Fort Washington. At that location, both sides were surrounded by steep cliffs (The Palisades on the New Jersey side, and Washington Heights on the New York side). Thus, it was possible to build the bridge without either impeding maritime traffic or requiring lengthy approach ramps from ground level.[75]

Drive from LGA down Grand Central to the triboro to Major Deegan to the Transmanhattan Expressway across the GWB to Fort Lee in rush hour is some pretty epic traffic. I’ve only done it once in my life, but it took about 3.5 hours just to get out of NYC.

I crossed MFH way the fuck up there from 87. Across the Harlem River and then through the transverse tunnel thing with the apartment buildings towering over you and onto the GWB.

Also, I had to go to Pennsylvania. Connecticut wasn't going to help me that night.

Usually a bridge destroys neighborhoods. No one wants to live near or under a bridge. The area of the Bronx where the bridge extends to (cross Bronx expressway/95) used to be prosperous before the bridge.

In the 20s and 30s, there still weren't that many neighborhoods on the far west side, and the existing ones were mostly slums or light industry

NY literally bulldozed entire communities like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Juan_Hill%2C_Manhattan?wprov=sfla1 to get shit built, so I don't think this was a sticking point

Fuck no. WSS is like down on the east side, above 96th, maybe 100th street over there somewhere. It's basically the same neighborhood as the one from which all of the Central Park 5 came.
