I've been avoiding watching it for years because I had a brother who died young, and I heard it has similar themes. Finally got around to watching it and oh man - what a great film.

Made me want to move to Montana. Wished my father was a preacher man in a simpler time. Totally straight but would let Brad Pitt have his way with me.

It triggered tons of emotions, but many of which were positive. It makes you realize that life is a beautiful things, with ups and downs, and no matter what you do that's just the way it is. I think one of it's lasting themes is that you have to enjoy the good times when you're in them, when they're there, because they don't last forever...but at the same time the bad times don't last forever either.

so if thinking about happy moments with them usually makes me sad bc i know theyre no longer here and those will never happen again, this will help give me new perspective?

Montana doesn't look like that or feel like that anymore (if it ever did).

There is no escape.

Siblings and those that we cannot reach dying young is a theme as old as time itself. It's tough stuff and the movie really does a good job playing with this stuff. So does the novella. I mean it's truly powerful.

But "oh Montana is great" because of ARRTI is some BS. You have to face your problems wherever you lay your head brother. You can't just run away.

I didn't mean that Montana is great because there are no problems - rather that it has readily accessible natural beauty. I've visited multiple times and that hasn't changed - fishing the Madison, Gallatin, Missouri, Blackfoot is very peaceful and allows you to step back and put things in perspective.

Are you seriously telling me the Gallatin Valley is not teeming with cute flappers? Because I don't think I believe you, friend.

Never been there. But from what I've read, the Neil's from California have ruined the place.

If you've never been you really can't opine on this. There are enough rivers in Montana to keep you happy for a lifetime, and while Bozeman may be overrun with Californians the rest of the state is largely untouched, especially when you venture outside the cities.

Take a look at a map of the place and its major rivers - live in one of the smaller towns. I spent a summer in Ennis and another summer in Livingston - both were 180 in almost every respect. Not sure I'd like to spend winters up there however.

I spent two years in Missoula and traveled around the area as much as I could. Livingston and Ennis were both tiny little communities. What were you doing there?

Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding.

i loved the scene where the 4 of them go to the speakeasy and dance...and the scene where the girlfriend's brother "picks up" Rawhide at the bar...and the scene where rawhide and the girlfriend's brother get sunburned...and the scene where the girlfriend gets mad at the protagonist because her brother got sunburned...
