it really was just during the cold war, the military got good at research and NASA too, lots of that shit like wifi and internet tranferred into private sector, u also had a relatively brief few decades here US got good at building highways, airports, universities
that was so long ago we are literally talking like pre 1990, almost everything since then has been related to pre 1990 research
