can't imagine the lockdowns were good for his income.

or maybe he got smart and found a real job. being a professional poker player seems like it would get really old, really fast.

It’s an awful way to make a living unless you’re one of the top 1% of high rollers. Even guys like Hellmuth make more money selling private “coaching” to rubes and getting various sponsorship money.

The online games are too tough to grind for real money these days and you can’t get the volume in live to make a great income unless at the highest stakes and with access to special games loaded with donkeys that people like :D have no chance to regularly access.

from what i've read the online meta-autists making low 6 figures a year playing 20 hours a day are actually better players than people on TV which seems counter-intuitive

Multi-tabling online without any reads or tells other than your opponent's hand history is a completely different game

if you took a top internet player and put them against a top live professional heads-up in a live setting, it's very likely the the top internet player would win over a large sample. they have a way better understanding of hand ranges and mathematically optimal play than live professionals. the slow place of live play necessitates maximal exploitation of weak players (who are often quite plentiful). the edges in online play are much smaller since the player pool is much tougher

This isn’t wrong but the top internet players aren’t going to get invited into the juicy high stakes games because the whales would rather play with Ivey or Daniel Negrenau than autists like :D.

It's pretty routine for live pros to play lots of online hands -- Ivey, Hellmuth, Negreanu, Esfandiari, Jake Schindler, etc. all play/ed a lot online. Most pros have just as many hours playing 5 tables at a time online as any autist, but they also have way more live time.

most of them weren't successfully playing nosebleed games online. Ivey and Antonius are notable exceptions, but guys like Negreanu had major failures against online professionals (see the match against Doug Polk)

I think a lot of mid-level pros do, but this is a fair point.

Incidentally, I think Phil Ivey is the best alive.

Jake Schindler is also on a real hot streak.

It’s definitely true in a lot of ways but they are heavily aided with real time tracking software (which perma displays their opponents stats via a HUD) and real time calculator tools for tough hands.

I used poker tracker 3 back before Black Friday. I imagine the software has only gotten better since then. If you google poker tracker you can have an idea what this software does and see how much the deck is stacked against casual players who don’t use this stuff.
