Because you know it's always easy to bring this stuff out of me, the late 90s / early 00s idyllic suburban SoCal nostalgia:

I remember one of the first times I had a girlfriend over circa 7th grade (after her parents felt comfortable, having gotten to know my parents and so on), and going to our mini home theater room with some very comfortable leather couches, a very high ceiling, and nice artwork on the walls from my dad's business travels.

(One of my dad's treasured rooms, as is often the case; he was proud to be the first of his friends to get a DVD player back in the late 90s - with Gone with the Wind as the showpiece, of course!)

And after he helps us get set up (I was always very confused by any kind of universal remote situation) and leaves the room, I get up to turn the light off on the Art Deco style dimmable torchere lamp (if I'm using the proper terminology, but you get the picture, I think) that was the main source of light in the room.

A few minutes later, my dad walks in, turns the light back up to half way dim, gives me one of those sympathetic yet stern "Sorry [Emilio], not on my watch" and walks out. And being the lovable Anglo-German shepherd that he is, he knew that I wouldn't even consider getting up to turn the light down again, even if I thought my family was on the other end of the house, etc.

ah man, 180 protective dad.

lol i remember when dvd was still exciting. love gone with the wind btw.

it's surreal how innocent dating was when we were kids. i think i'm a little (within a half-decade) younger, and even then it was always more sadness on the father's part that the parents couldn't control the daughter outside the house, even if i was trying to best to be what i thought a fedora-esque gentleman looked like. think looks of suspicion that we were going to walk to jamba juice and hang out in the neighborhood chatting. have no idea what it's like now.

"ah man, 180 protective dad."

Gorgeous sheepdog, it's true!

"lol i remember when dvd was still exciting. love gone with the wind btw."

;-)

"it's surreal how innocent dating was when we were kids."

!!! Never ceases to blow my mind how so much benevolent patriarchal tradition has been erased in the last 20 years, and in highly Orwellian memory hole fashion. ("What benevolent patriarchy?" "Trusted experts have other ideas...")

"to be what i thought a fedora-esque gentleman looked like."

LMAO, another highly relatable thing (in the unironic sense, before fedora became a joke word): which makes me thank my lucky stars in general, that I had my older sister and some of her (noblesse oblige, evidently) friends, who graciously took pity on me and ensured that I kept a fairly respectable aesthetic (hairstyle, clothes, who I dated, date ideas, etc.) course throughout my youth, for the most part!

Regarding fedora-esque gentlemen, again in the unironic sense - crazy to think I grew up (33 now) in a fairly traditional household with limited pop culture exposure (a mindset that has served me very well, thank God!), so it would have never occurred to me what *tips fedora* meant / means until I learned the reference on 4chan circa 2012 or so, LMAO - I remember the first time I said something about the bizarre lib atheist trend of casual clothing + fedora...

...And my dad is a very old and respectable Boomer (even in his SoCal surfer days, he never had a lib / Radical Chic phase of any kind, never insecure about his identity - always unapologetically pro-white pro-Christian pro-West all along, kind of a Charlton Heston type in that regard: rarely in step with his nihilistically self-destructive / civilization-destructive generational peers, outside of his family friends and fellow business owners)...

...who remembers his WW2 Gen (born in the 1910s) father wearing the standard suit and fedora uniform of his businessman cohort. Thus my dad asks without a trace of irony, "I don't get it: what's wrong with wearing a fedora?" So I show him a picture of a representative fedora atheist, and my dad's immediate 100% earnest reaction is, of course: "That guy could use a shave." Which, of course, was true!

"have no idea what it's like now."

I live in a fairly conservative and fairly affluent area, so there's still a lot of traditional courtship and lifestyles in general going on - but LMAO at what's occurring outside these oases scattered throughout the Ruins of Christendom. (It's why GKC and Lewis compared Christendom to the Fortified City of Troy, and I compare Christendom to Redwall Abbey!)

I'm very glad I haven't used social media since Facebook was necessary for certain club events in college, and most of my loved ones have the same mindset. A bit of the St. Benedict Option going on around here... thank God.

(Sorry for the TL;DR, as always...)

lol i think we might've had bizarrely similar kinds of dads. mine was a stoner artist back in his day, ended up maeking it in business, but never really had any patience for the destructive lib stuff - grew up saying we should shoot people for graffiti etc., any of the real things that reflect and reinforce urban rot, lol, despite all his other lib pieties.

that's sweet about your sister and her friends, man.

i'm not a benedict option guy, but i read it and have a lot of sympathy with the position. my main question is whether it actually would work with children.

Based old school lib dad, it sounds like (back when libs actually liked white Christian civilization, but fell for the "live and let live" camel's nose in the tent / welfare state -> dependent population scam / sometimes maybe a little ego-affirming savior complex stuff).

"that's sweet about your sister and her friends, man."

!!! A lot of wonderful stories to tell and lifetime movies (as in movies of our lifetime!), to compare notes beyond the personality purification Earthly womb...

"i'm not a benedict option guy, but i read it and have a lot of sympathy with the position. my main question is whether it actually would work with children."

CQ. So far my family and friends have been about the soft St. Benedict Option - more to do with Camp of the Saints vigilance, being a part of the mainstream while never being of it, always maintaining the capacity to be temporarily self-reliant in some moderate way, teaching the value of healthy skepticism, passing on key tools for avoiding the painful Great Relearning experience (appreciating tradition), etc.

"sometimes maybe a little ego-affirming savior complex stuff"

yeah, if this isn't part of the phenomenon, i'd be shocked and confused. i do think people tend to mean sincerely well in some way and truly malevolent evil is rare, but good intentions are easily perverted. definitely how i feel about my dad half the time when we talk about politics (which we do more often than you might expect, these days).

always share re: sister man. i'm an only child so this is somewhat abstract, but i find it sweet nonetheless.

cr last paragraph. be adjacent to modernity, not of it - the reactionary position of abandoning it might not work for most people (we're poasting, after all), but there's a distance we can keep.

!!! The Bent One on the prowl, as Lewis warned...

"which [chatting] we do more often than you might expect, these days"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds like a mysteriously wholesome / heartwarming endeavor given our past convos, don't ask me why.

"always share re: sister man. i'm an only child so this is somewhat abstract, but i find it sweet nonetheless.

TY. Okay one more brief slice of life, is that one of my sister's friends who always really loved me for whatever reason - it was that friend who said "Just kiss her already!" when I was a shy 7th grader holding hands with my first girlfriend; and after that first girlfriend and I broke up, it was my sister and that friend who brought us back together at the end of high school with constant reminders at school or at home hanging out by the pool or whatever: "She's looking really good these days, [Emilio] - why did you guys break up again?"

"cr last paragraph. be adjacent to modernity, not of it - the reactionary position of abandoning it might not work for most people (we're poasting, after all), but there's a distance we can keep."

!!! You always feel like my life coach, as strange as that sounds. A wise yet easygoing and cuddly (no homo, needless to say) German shepherd type vs. my golden retriever stream-of-consciousness approach to life.

just remember i'm gay, retarded, and need to improve a lot in my life, lol, but i enjoy our friendship.

teenage romance is so weird. tyft. i had both experiences where i would try to insert myself into conversations to try to open up dating a girl and got rebuked, and experiences where i was doing dorky bullshit and a girl would pretend to be interested to try for a date, but i didn't realize until her friend told me later.

:-) I always seem to be a life coach for people older than I am IRL generally, and life coached by peers or younger - a strangely beautiful dynamic, AKA God's beautiful crazy Logos design...
