How expensive is a decent horse?

first, it was the saddle, $5k for a demo model.
next, we're leasing a horse to the tune of $1500 mo. + a few other fees related to housing the damn thing.
now, she's telling me how euro:usd makes buying a horse from europe a 'good deal'. there is no way buying a live animal from across the atlantic will be less than $50k...
is there any way to MAKE money off a horse? like, should i buy some kind of racehorse thing and hope it wins trophy or something? |

i feel like $$$ people who use this stable are putting in her head that 100k for a horse is nbd, but that's probably for something with documented paperwork, bred for competition, etc.
i just need to know if normal ttt horses that can trot around can be had for $5-10k or something
the blm thing is interesting, but i assume you have to sink a bunch of money to get it trained and run the risk that it says fuck that and stays feral |

If you want a nag for pony ride people will give away old horses. BLM horses are feral but they will pay you to take one. It can take 18 months for grand prix type riders to really optimally adjust to horse. However it's also great to be able to ride different horses and experience different temperaments. Are you trying to train to dressage level? Ride same horse that's suitable. Are you just trotting around and doing a few jumps and going for trail rides? Doesn't matter too much. she just trots around, does a few small jumps, and maybe 1x a year goes to a 'horse show' that costs $$$ but gives out ribbons for doing stuff. |

Fit is important -- I can't stand the hunter plodders but some people love them. A horse that's too much could be dangerous, but you want some room to grow. An experienced slightly older horse (16 or so) could be good to learn the ropes, but then you're in "free 22 yr old horse to good home" boat. There's a price curve with them cheap untrained and then most expensive probably 8-12, then cheaper approaching retirement.
