Did you ever get the "nigger" vs "black person" talk as a kid?

Not sure if you're talking to me, but I'll answer anyway. She had one son, a couple of years older than me. We both had the same nickname. At my mother's invitation she brought him over once to play, but the neighbors complained and insulted him so much she never did it again. I was about 3 or 4 and only vaguely understood what was going on. This would have been about 1950. He became a career Navy guy and I found him online a few years ago, but he had no interest in staying in touch.
Her husband was common law, and dropped dead of a heart attack while they were fishing when he was about 50. Sad. They lived in a neat little company house near a cotton compress where he worked.
She had two huge knife scars, one on her arm, and one on her neck, from a fight she got into with another woman. Never heard what it was about, but not sure that nigger survived the encounter.
We had a bathroom scale that went to 300. I used to get her to step onto it so I could watch it bang onto the stops.
She wanted to take me to school the first day I went, but, feeling grown up, I declined. I found out 20 years later than she followed me anyway.
Once she got her fingers stuck in a Chinese finger puzzle that I talked her into trying, and then she couldn't get them back out. I remember her trying to answer the telephone with her fingers stuck in that woven tube.
She was out sick once and had her sister-in-law fill in. That woman had the biggest boobs any of us kids had ever seen on a human, and no bra because there was never one made that big. That was near the end of her time taking care of me and all my Beavis and Butthead age friends came down to stare. That was the sister-in-law who cooked a pie with clothes starch instead of corn starch because she had heard that starch was part of the recipe. It was OK. A chocolate pie. I'm the one who figured it out because I got sent to the store to buy the starch.
She used to tell my mother than the NAACP was telling blacks not to fill out census forms. I remember a lot of conversation about "uppity niggers." Pronounced as one word.
She only got paid $10/week, which was about 1/3 of my mother's factory salary, plus food of course during the day, and whatever gifts or extra stuff we could spare. I still have an old Coca-Cola calendar with her paydays marked on it. My mother insisted on paying the full amount of the Social Security contribution, which wasn't very much back then, so she'd have something to retire on. My mom pretty much had to force her to enroll in SS, as she didn't want to do it, and would have refused if there had been even 25 cents withheld.
She quit taking care of me because my dad, who was an alcoholic, borrowed money from her and refused to pay her back, and in fact accused her of stealing. I don't blame her.
She died of cancer at about age 75. The last time I saw her, in the 1970s some time, she told me, "I had me this little jew doctor who kept telling me to lose weight. You know what? That little sucker up and died on me!"
She had also taken care of my sister, who was older, and initially could not read or write, but my mother, who had gone through the 8th grade, taught her. However, by age 4, I could read about as well as she could, probably better.
I mainly remember her being kind and laughing a lot. She was extremely loving and seemed like a happy person. I'm not sure she went to church, but she talked about God and Jesus a great deal. They were very real to her.
Good memories. I'm lucky to have known her.

I think kids who don't have racial agenda shoved down their throat instinctively understand it.
My kid, age 5, a few days after a doctor's appointment: I don't like the nurse at Dr W's office.
Me: Why?
Kid: She's black.
I'd never talked about race previously except to point out that there are people of different races.
