Just some perspective.
We live in a small town, rural Minnesota, and have all that we could ask for. A decent 3 bedroom home costing 500 a month, newish car (2016), and decent school districts to choose from. There's even plenty to do for entertainment that's so cheap its practically free. A state park pass is $35 and gets a full year of unlimited acess. Theres all sorts of hiking/biking trails all over the state, totally free to use. A plethora of lakes for some family fun free of charge as well. Some decent places to eat, though home cooked tastes so much better IMHO. The local big town even has a live theater that's super cheap and always a good time. We dont have to be spending like daddy warbucks to have an exciting and fulfilling life.
Yes, location counts a lot. However, perspective does, too. We're happy to be living within our budget and are low debt compared to most folks I know. Not keeping up with the joneses is the way to go. I feel like the previous generations pushed this perverse view of "the american dream" and chasing it is stressing so many of us out. Just take a step back, be thankful for where you are, and enjoy life. You'll be just fine.
