And here's another data point. The reason why Mikhail Prokorov and other robber barons of his ilk ripped off the state so hard during the transition in the 90s is he had gone to the London School of Economics. But very few people did. He was basically sent there because the Soviets were like ok we need a small number of people to go figure out how the rest of the world works.

I don't know how anyone can say in good faith that the Soviets were not true believers in economic Marxism when they were all so insanely poor and didn't print dollar bills. Gorbachev cared about economics but didn't know anything about economics? That doesn't make sense. He was the first and only Soviet leader who was born in the Soviet Union. He grew up under Stalin.
