Isn’t it kind of odd that no one has empathy for teachers

Lots of people have stressful or difficult jobs, but you disproportionately hear teachers complaining.
Most jobs suck. If you don’t like it, stop complaining and get a different job (though you’ll probably have to start working during the summer I guess).

Most people will say they like teachers and that it’s a hard job, (though most people will also think to themselves and not say that summers off and 6.5 hour work days seems like a decent deal). To the extent that people don’t like “the schools” these days they don’t blame teachers, even if they acknowledge that there are some truly dogshit teachers who should be fired. But they mostly blame the unions and the admin, which is correct. The problem is that we don’t sufficiently question the baked in structural elements like the school calendar and paying thousands of school districts at the local level to do the same jobs that could easily scale in the age of computers and software (or worse they do pure made up/make work bullshit like diversity promotion programs that just involve bad stats research or else their jobs are to get bamboozled by the snake oil sales men that educational publishers pay to bilk tax dollars out of the schools).
It would be very good for this country to fire 80% of the admin in the country, run admin at the state level, not the local level, publicize and scrutinize Ed spending much more and use the billions of dollars of savings that would generate to hire 50% more teachers and pay them 50-75% more. As a trade off for those improvements we should also shift the school day to an 830-530 schedule with built in after school activities and way more time for independent and non-academic/recess periods, and go to year round school with 4 seasonal 2-3 week breaks annually. Teaching positions would be a way better use of the 1-2M super underemployed liberal arts and soft science grads working at Starbucks. And most people would stick with it as a career if they only had 15-20 kids in a classroom instead of 30 and it paid like a decent white collar job. Do all that and we’re in good shape, other than maybe making it less expensive to educate/babysit sped retards.

1) Teacher pay is insanely low. Teachers in my area start at $50k, whereas my paralegals make $80k - and these are not big law paralegals - they're glorified admin assistants.
2) The "teaching is easy voices are fucking idiotic. Think about how much a normal office drone preps for a 20 minute presentation (often weeks), and they're exhausted afterwards. Teachers are lecturing for hours a day and have to be "on" even when they're not. In many ways, watching my own kids is more demanding than being a lawyer - and I ahve 3 of them - not fucking 30.

You need to at least acknowledge the elephant in the room that like 55% of 10 year olds are URMs. This is pushing salaries down bc their bad phenotypes cause people to ngaf. IOW, our Schools are less Chick fil an and more Taco Bell.
