I want to change inhousr jobs but the idea of writing about what I do, much less trying to make it sound important, makes me want to killself. My wife is HR and says no one really gives a shit - there’s just looking to see if you got a need. I want to believe ther but then I looked online and it looks like people go bananas with executive summaries, describing specific projects etc. Can someone convince me that that isn’t necessary?

It’s a formality that merely speaks to the strength of your work product and gives your interviewers a quick guide to a few things to ask you about.

By mid-career you should be looking for new work via your industry network and competitive for new roles based on the obvious strength of your current and past roles.

What's your experience level, and what are the job titles you're targeting (Sr. Counsel, AGC, GC, etc.)?

15 years total, 6 of inhouse. Targeting anything that has a chance of making me not feel dead inside:

Ok. Sounds like you're looking for a career pivot into something like bartending at a country club. Don't think they give a fuck about your legal experience.

If you decide to stay in law, the thing you want to keep in mind is that your resume is being read by HR dolts who know nothing about the law or legal skills, and if you're going for less than GC, is also being read by a pedantic shithead hiring manager who takes his craft very seriously. There's really only one CR approach with that understanding.

Yeah that’s what I was trying to say to my wife - while the HR shithead may glance at it for no more than 30 seconds, the hiring manager is probably going to look at it closely and whatever’s on there may impact the questions I get during an interview and where the conversations go - which can be painful if you end up fielding a bunch of questions about something you barely remember and/or don’t give a shit about.

Writing a resume is a weird and pointless skill, if you don't feel comfortable with it just hire a resume writing service. Pick one used to dealing with lawfags.

writing a resume is a necessary but pointless skill. a good resume won't get you a job but a bad resume will cost you one. but yeah, agonizing over a resume is gay. pay some hr shrew on fiverr to do it for you.
