it's worse than a joke. valuing self-mastery betrays an underlying belief that some ways of living are better than others (i.e. giving into every given impulse). the purely hedonic man sees this and feels himself to be judged and found weak. he is aghast at the mere insinuation that he, or anyone, may be doing something wrong, he rails against his implicit critic and any signs of this haughty self-mastery. he blames everyone and everything but himself. it's no mere joke: it's a palpable and undeniable threat to everything he believes and, worse, the comfortable inertia of his shitty habits.
