I think their fatal flaw was cashing the nostalgia ticket in real time, so their fans were buying a chance to miss the 70s.
Now, when people miss the 90s no one misses the Black Crowes

i remember an old rolling stone interview when they were attacking REM. That was the quality of their opposition initially.
