Am I insane for wondering why the jury is involved at all in this Trump NY case?

I'm not a criminal lawyer, but it would seem to me that the court would need months of hearings to figure out how in the world these charges actually amount to a crime, and then the judge would need to specify what the jury is to decide as to the facts, and then we have the jury trial?
I don't get why we're starting with letting the jury decide if these "false" business records were in connection with a federal crime that Trump isn't being charged with and that no one has specified the elements of?
