I don't have to worry about debt.
I'm going to Wayne State Law.
And I'm only 19!!
Ain't that prestigious?!

Duh.
Presuming you're going to study in law school. If you're at the very bottom of your class anywhere but HYS, you *might* miss out on biglaw.
On the other hand, with no debt, who really gives a shit?

sounds to me like failing to lock in your government loans at like 1.5% was actually your biggest mistake
that or being rich enough not to get government loans but taking out private loans anyway

I wonder who'd you could get as an advisor. Charlie Nesson, probably not. Maybe Zittran?
The problem with this decision is that for most of us, in retrospect, it would have made sense to go to Columbia or Chicago for $$$. But this was before you realized you weren't going to be the next Louis Brandeis. For some people here, like the ones on law review and going to clerk for a feeder judge with ambitions of writing cute law papers for the rest of their life, HLS was worth the $. For the rest of us going into biglaw, when we could have probably gotten the same or de minimus lesser job out of Chicago, yea, it probably wasn't worth it. But its really hard to know which one you are going to be prospectively...

prestige can only be nice if all else is equal. all else is never equal => prestige is irrelevant in basically all cases.
i was just trying to make a clearer statement against prestige than you.

listen to this guy
I turned down 80,000 at Michigan and fullride at Duke and Georgetown for Columbia.
I'm 100% positive I'd have exactly the same job if I went elsewhere. Instead, I have 100,000 debt I'll be paying off for 10 years.
I would rather these checks I'm dropping in the mail every month pay for a mortgage or a porshe or a ferrarri or something.
I knew I wanted to do public service and I knew that within reason it didn't really matter where I went to school for the type of law I wanted (big or mid law with public service bent and lots of pro-bono).
I chose poorly.

If it were a XOXOer we're discussing, I'd tell them to take the money. Nobody should ever take out more than 80-100 in loans. It's just stupid.
But I couldn't give two shits about an LSDer. Tell them to take the loans. More money for me when I lateral to BIGBANKING.
As for GDMF, enjoy paying my salary next year, bitch. You will continue to work 80 hours a week to pay for that pretty HLS diploma while my NYU degree hangs in an 88th floor banking office that you payed for. I won't be there half the time you're working, of course. I'll be out drinking.
Thanks in advance!

yo, while you're being helpful:
1 yr out of ugrad, ee.
options are NU, GULC, UCLA (in-state). full price, I know I'm a dumbass. might get into a better school yet, we'll see. is it worth it???
or wait 2 more years, guaranteed Top 3 b-school (GMAT completed).
will have around $50k cash coming in if I go this year.
opinions?
tyvm.

good recs from
1) 2 VPs at big firm.
2) Top b-school grad, who's gotten two of his prev analysts in.
780 GMAT.
what? I don't know yet. If I can get a V3, then I'll do M&A in NYC. Otherwise I'd be looking at SF. KVN at best, WSGR or Heller at worst.
Plan to do a few years biglaw, then go to the start-up scene.
With b-school, again depends. If I can get Goldman or PE, then that. Else work my way up to Fortune 50 Director level position, then go to start-up scene.
I'm pretty open. Law school seems more interesting than b-school, purely in an academic sense. B-school you don't learn ANYTHING, it's just a long networking session.

you're not going to get kvn from the schools you listed. wsgr or heller are easy enough.
i thought the same thing about law school being somehow academic. it sorta is, but it mostly sucks.

yeah, I've gotten that. except from people in b-school, the "mostly" isn't there.
i'm pretty sure only way I get KVN is if I do really well and transfer, obviously not counting on that. the other firms will be fine too.
the other thing is I liked history in high school, never liked ee much -- having a job out of ugrad is good though --... so thinking i might like law school, dunno.

hmph.
well. iono.
why did you go to law school to begin with? I just think it would be a good experience, and something I won't regret in 6 years. It's not like with a good law degree and good undergrad engineering degree you can't switch back into IT whenever.
I have some other options now, definitely want to leave my well-paid corporate job... have an offer to go to a funded mid-stage startup.

exactly what i was thinking when i decided to go. i also wanted to leave my well-paid job. but it's 3 years, it sucks, and the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. if i were you, i'd go to the startup. in fact, is there an email address i can send a resume to?
