John and Lorena Bobbitt’s story shocked the world in 1993 when Lorena severed John’s penis with a kitchen knife after what she claimed were years of physical and sexual abuse. She alleged that John had raped her that night, an accusation he denied. After a high-profile trial, John was acquitted of marital rape, and Lorena was found not guilty of malicious wounding by reason of temporary insanity. Remarkably, surgeons were able to successfully reattach John’s penis.

Following the trials, the couple divorced in 1995 and went their separate ways. Lorena returned to her maiden name, Lorena Gallo, and built a new life focused on advocacy. She later married again and had a daughter. Lorena also founded a nonprofit organization called “Lorena’s Red Wagon,” which supports survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Over time, she became an outspoken advocate for women's rights and participated in documentaries and films, including Amazon Prime’s “Lorena,” produced by Jordan Peele, and the Lifetime movie I Was Lorena Bobbitt.

John attempted to capitalize on his notoriety through various means, including appearances in adult films, forming a band called The Severed Parts, and making reality TV appearances. He eventually settled in Las Vegas, taking on a series of odd jobs. In more recent years, John has dealt with significant health issues. He lost all ten toes due to toxic peripheral polyneuropathy, a condition he believes was caused by exposure to contaminated water during his time as a U.S. Marine at Camp Lejeune. He now relies on prosthetics and special footwear to walk.

Today, Lorena Gallo continues her work as an advocate, using her platform to bring attention to the issues of domestic violence and support survivors. John Bobbitt lives a more low-key life, focusing on his health and reflecting on the turbulent events that made him a household name. Though their paths diverged long ago, the legacy of their infamous case continues to prompt discussions about abuse, justice, and media spectacle.
