summary: A months-long fixation on Way Down Hadestown has led me to explore the song’s many performances, its creator’s iterative process, and the mythological world it evokes. What keeps drawing me back is a vision of the underworld whose attractions and horrors are inseparable, and whose unresolved contradictions may illuminate something about my own psychic development.
