Gary Paulsen, Author of Hatchet, Dead at 92

Author Gary Paulsen, best known for writing young adult fiction novels such as Hatchet, The River, and Woodsong, has died this morning at the age of 92, Publishers Weekly confirmed in a tweet. Paulsen was the author to over 200 books that explore adventure and survival in the wilderness. He competed in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1983 and wrote two memoirs, Woodsong and Winterdance, on his sled dog racing experience, the latter being the inspiration for the 2002 film Snow Dogs.

Fans of Paulsen turned to Twitter to pay tribute to the adventurous author. Dogsledder and author Blair Braverman “fell in love with mushing through Gary Paulsen’s stories about his sled dogs.” Jarrett J. Krosoczka, the author of the Lunch Lady series, recalled his interview with Paulsen earlier this year as “an honor of a lifetime.” Paulsen’s last book, How To Train Your Dad, was published in September of 2021 by Pan Macmillian publishers.

Loved Hatchet. It inspired me to become an anxious balding lawyer spending life staring at Microsoft Outlook.

My wife got me an actual hatchet last year (I’m hard to shop for).

I read “Hatchet” back in the day but WTF do I do with this thing? I had a log for our fire pit that was too long to fit in this summer, so I wanted to cut it in half. OK! Got out the hatchet and starting hacking. Didn’t do more than dent the damn thing, wtf? Isn’t cutting wood what you are supposed to do with a hatchet?

I don’t know but no man should be without a splitting maul. I always liked how it was called a maul, like an RPG weapon

you don't blindly 'hack' at logs with a hatchet. you're supposed to create a 'V'-shaved divot using angled slices and then continue that process until you reach the underside.
