They are better now but the interior of the Q5 is dated as compared to the Lexus NX/RX the Genesis GV70 and the BMW X3. The Lexus has the best infotainment, the BMW has the best powertrains and the Genesis has the sickest interior and exterior look. All three are better values than the Audi.

Honestly I would buy the X3 but it’s against my religion to buy anything made by stinking Krauts so I went with the Lexus.

My Audis have been solid. I had a 2002 A6 2.7T that I drove for 11 years with no problems. Then I got a 2013 A6 3.0 that I drove until 2021. Sold it to a friend and it is still going strong. Have had a 2021 A8L V8 since 2021 and it has been trouble free. However, Audi is so focused on electric cars I'm not sure I will buy another Audi. They are not updating the IC cars much. Also, I am not a huge fan of the way they implement all the tech features. Honda does a better job.

you have to be smart enough to know you got lucky, nobody drives a german car for 11 years without a problem unless it's an early 90's E class

I had a 97 Mercedes E class that was somewhat troublesome. I had a BMW 330i convertible for 7 years with no problems other than a small oil leak fixed under warranty. My most troublesome cars have been Chrysler, VW, and Subaru. IMO all modern cars are reasonably reliable. The 2013 A6 is now at about 120,000 miles and has had only minor repairs. It's still got its original battery. Since my friend now owns it he keeps me up to date. Says it's the best car he ever owned. He bought another Audi (Q7) as a result of the experience. Replaced his Lexus RX with the Q7.

The math you need to do is less about reliability than cost of repair when something does break. The more mass produced the vehicle the cheaper the parts. All else equal BMW parts are 2x the price of Toyota/Lexus just because they make more Toyota/Lexus cars. Simple things like bushings are twice the price to say nothing of LCD screens ($2k v. $5k to replace). Same arithmetic applies to Audi.

I don't care about the cost as much as having to traipse back and forth to the repair place and having a car that breaks down while I'm out and about. However, my cost of ownership of Audis has been very low. BTW, going to an independent shop is a big money saver on German cars. Good ones are at least as good as the dealers for half the price. You usually just don't free snacks and a free loaner though.
