I have a bunch of friends in NY, many more in CA and tons in TX who are all very invested, even Mavs fans who are disgusted are still pretty sucked in by the entire Luka/Flagg saga and the hero and villian arcs of the stars in SA and Houston. Spurs fans are obviously obnoxiously, deliriously happy right now and Rockets fans have a perpetual look on their faces like they just found out their wife is cheating on them and filed for divorce. The U.S. v international aspect and the race war elements are solid engagement hooks. It’s true that casual basketball fans don’t care about any of this, but it has the feeling of epigenesis while the league is also in the midst of a huge generational shift. NBA right now feels like a value stock that’s trading at a low multiple with a perfect chart that’s on the verge of a breakout as we get closer to 2030, and it’s poised for a clear separation from baseball and cementing its status as the unquestioned #2 sport in the U.S. and for huge gains globally as the international streaming build out progresses. Asians have definitely fallen off from 10-15 years ago because they all loved Kobe and his super study striver schtick and the distant patriarch approach he took to Jeremy Lin and loved Steph as an avatar of weak, very skinny dudes who can’t dunk at 6’3” being held up as one of the world’s greatest athletes. But lots of Gen Xers who watched Jordan as kids are more into the NBA than they’ve been since the peak of the splash brothers.
The other thing is that the NBA dominates on social media, plus the WNBA/Caitlin Clark driven burst in girls basketball popularity and there’s a clear aversion to both football and weekend destroying travel soccer and baseball among youth sports parents post-Covid, so basketball has more hooks into 40-something wage cuck UMC dads who are parents of sports-enjoyer kids. |
