They are overhauling all of this and by the end of the year retailers will start charging more for using point-based credit cards.

It’s going to be three tiers—store cards like a Costco or Amazon card, low cost cards with crap cash back but low swipe fee, business expense card.

Guess all good things come to an end. I’ve put $56k on my business card so far this calendar year, maybe by the end of this year or the next I’ll have a few free hotel stays. Better than nothing

i don't really understand how points equate into hotel stays / airfares and i don't see any good public resources to help me. i see sites that "value" points from different cc providers but i don't see anything that actually allows me to understand how many points i'd need to pay for a stay, how many points i need to accumulate to have that opportunity, etc.

i don't really travel that much and i'd happily just do the cash back. but i don't want to miss an opportunity, and if i got a good enough deal on travel it would be an incentive to go somewhere for me.

You can get chase and when you log in they have a redeem section that goes to their travel portal. You can look at flights and hotels in points. I recently went to Europe with my wife on points only (economy unfortunately but free is free). There’s also a 1:1 exchange where you can cop random shit and get really good deals on business class etc but that requires certain schedule flexibility and following various blogs

when i look at amex's portal for my business checking account it has a "calculator" that says that 10k points is worth anywhere between $70-100 for various airfare / hotel / what have you. but that doesn't make sense to me. but that doesn't make sense to me based on what people say points are worth. so i figure i need to see actual deals, idk if it's that i don't have enough points accumulated to even see them or if they just don't exist.

I have like 350k chase points between business and personal which are worth around $3500, but value can be extended by exchanging them 1:1 and taking advantage of deals. I don’t really do this though because it’s too much effort but if you’re unemployed, wealthy, and an autist then it can work

if you don't do that, how did you turn your points into free travel, just by racking up enough? would you have been able to pay for it purely on cash back if you had done that instead of points?

Yeah probably. Next trip I take i wanna just look for a good deal and go wherever. The last one was a specific time and place my wife wanted to go.

I was looking into credit cards to kind of overhaul my spending and get organized but it looks like everything is changing.

I have minimal business spend each year—maybe $5-10k? I think I’m going to need to go Costco card soon. Possibly Amex Blue if they keep the 6% on groceries. And then maybe one 2% card. Possibly move some shit over to fidelity and use theirs, but I do like that VMFXX settlement account at Vanguard. I don’t know. Feels like chasing after Pennie’s at the end of the day.

Never used an actual travel reward before. Seems too hard to use and not a very good deal. I also have to travel with like 6 people. I get bonuses like upgrades to economy plus simply by just buying the tix, why shoot for a travel reward.

Anyway, it’s too much of a hassle.

Just do cash back

It may be possible to eke out more value with points here or there but the era of miles/points gaming is mostly over.
