There's no real science behind it, and if you're cynical about it, you might think the therapist doesn't want you to get better because then their source of income dries up. Is that too cynical? In my experience, that's reality. If you read about the guidelines and techniques behind CBT, the only form of therapy that has some evidence behind it, it's supposed to be a structured, time-limited technique that involves you doing homework in between sessions to identify, unwind, address, and dismantle the negative thoughts and beliefs that are the source of your distress. You'll have to cycle through tens of therapists to find someone who will actually do this; the rest rely on generic "talk therapy" that just brings in a steady income irrespective of your (lack of) improvement.
