it has 150k miles. i paid $3k for it on an impulse buy from an acquaintance. it was sitting for months as a non-runner, he tried to take it apart then gave up as he got lazy. its now in the repair shop, they have to put the intake manifold back on, which will cost $500 before they can even figure out if there's something wrong with it.

how fucked/stupid am I?

yeah, he got in over his head. also the X5 is the most complicated car he worked on

im regretting this. feels like i'm flushing like $5k+ (possibly more) down the toilet for an unreliable POS

I think it’s an N52 so not turbo. Why did he take the intake manifold off? VANOS shit the bed?

I have only worked on the older BMW inline 6 engines, but they are not terrible to work on like the V8. I probably could put it back together easy enough.

he said he thinks it was the gasket but wasn't completely sure; he said it had low power, stalling issues then stopped running. he was going to replace the gasket, then put it back on to see if it solved the problem. he's really not a mechanic, the guy doesn't even have a professional scanner or anything. in retrospect im wondering whether he was being deliberately vague to hustle me without overtly lying.

i guess i'm wondering whether i overpaid and whether these things are hunks of junk at this age + mileage. i'm worried that the mechanics are gonna have to tear down the engine again once they put it together or have an expensive repair like the VANOS you mentioned

Honestly, horrible idea. It is cheap because repairs are expensive. Since it is a non-turbo 3.0, it isn't even fast. And X5s aren't exactly beasts offroad either.
