On first read I thought his point was “Why are fleeing Ukrainians talked about with such sympathy? They’re white [for godsake, don’t give them sympathy].” I think that’s how a lot of the outraged Twitter folks read it too.
Now I realize what he meant was probably: “Why are fleeing Ukrainians talked about with such sympathy? [Because] They’re white.”
The headline itself isn’t racist like a lot of the comments suggest. It’s (falsely) accusing the West of being racist. But ljl at how easy it is to be left with the first impression.
