A genie is going to make you the 100th best player in the world at any one sport of your choice. You'll still be you in terms of age, appearance, where you live, etc. In other words, you don't become the 100th best soccer player and also get a contract with some Premier League team. You have to figure out what to do with your newfound abilities from the starting point of your IRL.

You'll be as prone to injury and improvements or declines in your abilities as the average player in whatever sport you pick is in his rookie year in the big leagues and adjusted from there continuing through your career, adjusted for how hard you workout, how much you practice, etc.

If you pick a team sport, you can pick your position, too. E.g., if you say you want to be a pitcher, you would be the 100th best baseball player/30th best pitcher.

What sport do you pick? What do you do with your new skills?

If you pick a sport + position, do you automatically become the 30th best at that position? Or does it depend on how many positions there are in that particular sport?

Aside from being the most important and glorious position in the most popular American sport, and aside from it undoubtedly being 180 to throw TD passes in an NFL game, this is a bad pick. How do you go from bald lawyer to playing QB? There aren't minor leagues that might give you a try out. There aren't open tournaments. And enjoy CTE.

- show up at one of the lower end schools in a power conference

- suck some cocks in the bathroom

- acquire scholarship + student athlete $$$

- stay for a year, maybe two if you're living Old School irl

- get drafted

Seems 180

What are eligibility rules for a bald, 40 year old lawyer who already graduated from college and law school? I would have thought NCAA wouldn't let you play.

The 20th best NFL QB would absolutely tear it up for Texas Tech or SMU (and not just in the bathroom).

are you talking about tyrell hatton? lol he’s not the 100th best in the world. 20th at worst. was ranked 11-15 in world ranking in the past year before he went to LIV.

i’d still take golf but being 100th best at any time really doesn’t mean shit on its own. one slump or injury and you might never have a tour card again. and it depends on other factors whether you’d be worth $$ to LIV or endorsements

Correct. There are 20 QBs in the top 100 of average annual value of NFL contract. So, you'd be roughly the 21st best NFL QB.

Interestingly, there are 20 QBs in the top 40 NFL contracts (from Dak at $60M AAV to Geno Smith at $25M AAV), but there are zero QBs with a salary between Geno Smith's $25M AAV and Gardiner Minshew's $12.5M, which is 189 in salary across all positions.

So, you'd be about as good as Gardiner or Geno Smith. At that point, being a back up QB might be tcr.

Is there a lot of variance such that you lose pretty often? Like, I'd never win a game of 1 on 1 basketball against the 100th best basketball player in the world. I could win against the 100th best poker player on occasion because sometimes I would get better cards.

For a scholar it wouldn't be so bad. You can just have an airpod in your ear and listen to podcasts/books on tape between relevant hands. As your wealth grew, you could play less as you'd have passive income from money in the market. It would also probably be better to just remain an unknown grinder, rather than a poker celebrity; much easier to swoop in and take chips if everybody just sees a lawfag in over his head.

This is a better life outcome than 99.99% of lawyers.

Over a long time period-- like say two weeks, which would be thousands of hands-- it would be basically impossible for the 100th best poker player to lose money. Most of the income would come from huge rushes that occur at unpredictable intervals. You have to remember that a lot of the poker money is just dumb tourist whales wasting money not knowing what they're doing.

And actually online might be even better-- you could just 10 table it and play from a locale where online poker is legal.

100th best is still cashing in tournaments and stuff. the variance thing is odd to bring up because every sport involves a ton of variance.

avg free throw percentage in the nba is about 75%. let's say an ordinary joe is 40%. that means it'll on average 10 attempts for the average joe to make one and the nba player to miss.

it's not an added element. variance is just a way we mathematically describe the range of outcomes. it's immaterial if that variance comes from cards or your opponent's sore calf acting up.

if anything the predictable variance makes it way easier.

any decent poker player can tell you with absolute certainty the odds of drawing the heart that'll make their flush based what cards have been revealed. a batter has only his experience and intuition to rely on when he's guessing whether a pitcher will throw a fastball or slider.

this is preposterous. the variance that comes from cards is mathematical and certain. the variance that comes from another players actions in a sport isn't. if anything, the predictability of poker odds makes the game less variable than sports.

a casino running on a 50.1% house edge will win over time. that variance inherent in this means absolutely nothing. in fact, the predictable, mathematical variance is precisely why the house always wins.

Well, you could certainly get lucky a few times but over the course of several hours, professionals will undoubtedly either win a lot or mitigate losses.

You're right, however, that variance plays a huge role in this. Because of variance, the difference in the 100th best player in the world and the very best player in the world is much more marginal in poker than it is in other games. You might not be Linus Loeliger, but you would make a lot of money and probably be able to avoid losing very much, especially if you sell some of your action.

For those saying baseball, I don’t think you even sniff the majors as a 40+ bald lawyer, even if you suddenly wake up with Luke Raley’s (an OF with ~100th best WAR in MLB this year) skill set. What’s your plan to get there? Insist some minor league staffer watch you in a batting cage? Pay them to face a pitcher who will probably record an out against you in a simulated plate appearance? I don’t think you’d have an easy time going the NCAA route as a 40 year old with a law degree either. How do you even get on their squad? Even if you eventually convince a MLB team you’d make a decent OF, they would assume your skill set would rapidly decline due to age.

Golf is my pick, although a case could be made for soccer, as top 100 probably gets you on some sort of low level pro team pretty quickly, and you could make a case for a very high paying euro contract within a year or so.

It's probably about as easy to make it as a baseball player as it is to make it as a soccer player in this hypo. Both have hundreds of professional teams. You start by posting a video of you doing something online--pitching 100 mph, hitting dingers, shooting the ball into the net from the opposite side of the field, tearing up a club league game--and try to use that to get a tryout with a minor league team. Once you're there, being 100th best in the world should be enough to propel you to the bigs.

I'd pick soccer over baseball because there are way more leagues out there. If you don't get to MLB in baseball (or maybe 1 or 2 other leagues in the world), you're screwed because minor leaguers make zero money, but in soccer, every country has a top division and as you go down the list to smaller and smaller countries/leagues, one would eventually take you and you'd still make some decent money playing in the Belgian league or wherever.

I don't think any MLB team would sign some unknown guy who just started playing in his 40s no matter how good he looked in the minors or anywhere else.

at 40 yrs old and with a white collar background you'd need a sport where you actually stand a chance of being allowed to compete at the top. basketball, baseball, football, and soccer are out. you aren't getting onto a professional team at that age, ever.

the obvious choice is golf, because there is actually is a clear path to the PGA for a pudgy lawyer who wakes up one day as the 100th best. tennis probably too.

why wouldn't you be able to get on a basketball team at 40? If you're a top 100 basketball player in the world you have tons of avenues to show it.

You could easily get into an open tryout for a G-league team or dominate the Drew League (which would lead to connections with NBA guys).

The Ringer ranked the top 100 NBA players https://nbarankings.theringer.com/

96. Colin Sexton

97. Derrick Lively

98. Jabari Smith Jr.

99. RJ Barret

100. Al Horford

There is no scenario where someone that talented isn't signed to an NBA team within 1 year.

I don't think any NBA front office is going to sign some >40yo white guy, who just started playing, to a big contract no matter how talented or good he is.

At the very best (and even this is unlikely), you'd be getting 1-year league minimum contracts until you inevitably get career-ending injuries in 1 or 2 years.

I think it needs to be a tournament/prize money sport like golf or tennis where you're not dependent on a small number of gatekeepers.

A reasonable concern, but presumably if I am the 100th best player in the world, my elbow has the expected durability of the 100th best player. Additionally, the hypo specifies that I would have the durability of an average rookie in the sport of choice, and I then gain or lose durability based on my care for my body.

Also, I'm far from 40 lol

Al Horford signed a 2 year , $19,500,000 contract with the Boston Celtics, including $19,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $9,750,000. In 2024-25, Horford will earn a base salary of $9,500,000, while carrying a cap hit of $9,500,000 and a dead cap value of $9,500,000.

But still. $10M/yr is just shy of what CSLG makes. And you'd get chicks.

He gets that contract because he's performed well at every level, in HS, college, the pros, also in shape, tall, he's a safe bet, also projected to keep performing at that level.

You as a white guy in your 40s with no history will not even get to speak to any decision maker at any NBA team, no matter how good you are. These are very risk-averse people operating under a limited budget.

Becoming a golf pro avoids all the gatekeeping.

The 100th best player on the planet would a *monster* if unleashed on civilians in an open gym. Hed dunk on much taller players, hit every open 25 footer and blow by everyone. He would be a global phenomenon

The NBA lives in fear of losing the interest of affluent white people that simply can't relate to 6'8 black dudes named jaylen. This guy would be the answer to Adam silver's prayers

I agree teams are risk averse. That's why theyd sign and stash him on their g league roster if nothing else. Jim Dolan would have the Knicks gm beaten to death if he let 40 year old white Jordan sign to Toronto or something

If you are 100th best, you should be thinking less about longevity and more about which sport maxes payment in early years.

If you are, in your prime, the 100th best, every year you'll fall lower and lower until you are quickly not making the cut in a top league and no longer make any money.

Maybe soccer then? There are 4 top leagues with 20 teams each and a 1st team roster of 20 players.

That's 1,600 roster spots on 1st division teams. Being top 100 ensures likely decent pay for a good number of years.
