Bill, 31, has been addicted to JSTOR, an academic database, for over six years.

"It started with a few journal articles here and there, but eventually I was reading entire dissertations," he said. "You get full-text access to like, everything," he added.

Bill's family staged an intervention last year hoping to end his reliance on the scholarship, but he quickly fell back into old routines. Within days, his mother found him on the bathroom floor reading a thesis on French literature and took away his internet connection.

"I don't have anything left, not even Wikipedia," he said. "It's hard, it's hard."
