Take Capcom for example. It made near arcade ports of a lot of its games on the SNES (Final Fight, Street Fighter II, Ghouls and Ghosts, etc). But a lot of the Genesis versions of these same games seemed like shitty afterthoughts. Was it the three button controller, one audio channel? Why did these third party Genesis devs mail it in a lot when developing multi-system games like this?

Ghouls n Ghosts on Genesis was an arcade port. The SNES game was a separate game. The former is much fucking harder btw.

Street Fighter 2 on Genesis actually sounds like the arcade and has the intro from the arcade.

Contra Hard Corps is an underrated sleeper classic

Mortal Kombat sounds Scummier and looks drabber on Genesis which is 180 imo

Castlevania Bloodlines is unequivocally a better game than IV.

Final Fight was completely outdone by Streets of Rage, which has a great soundtrack btw

Western devs thrived on the Genesis in general. I can’t think of a single good western game on SNES off the top of my head that wasnt better on the Genesis. Aladdin, Earthworm Jim, and sports games were all better on Genesis imho

A lot of 16 bit games werent really ports the way we think of them today btw. They couldn’t just Engineer them in C++, they had to use assembly language. So games were Engineered practically from scratch on each Console. Discuss

I saw some obscure thing somewhere that said that they actually didn’t use assembly language per se and had some kind of compiler. At least on SNES. Honestly who tf knows.

SNES had strong punch mapped to L by default which was always awkward and always needed changing. The SNES version is decent in general though. But again iirc the Genesis version has the same soundfont as the arcade. Although I like the SNES OST tbh

you can map all of the buttons.

but the 6 button is really perfect because you have weak/medium/strong punch/kick all lined up perfectly. and really the Saturn controller with the shoulder buttons is icing on the cake. whereas the SNES controller, if I map strong punch to Y, I kind of can't remember wtf everything else is mapped to.

Super Ghouls n Ghosts has god awful slowdown. Ghouls n Ghosts is smooth as butter. This is just a fact.

Mortal Kombat actually fits the drab aesthetic of Genesis even if SNES has better colors or whatever. The 32X version also has larger sprites like the arcade.
