Whoever is mentally ill enough to books 350 shows a year always wins this stupid metric
Last year it was Taylor Swift
Year before it was Ed Shereen
This lifestyle is worse than being an undercover spy IMHO

I think two non-music unique factors to Coldplay's success are (i) the lead singer marrying Gwyneth Paltrow created a ton of publicity and press for them over the years and (ii) they licensed their music to every single TV show and commercial.
Obviously the other major factor is that their music is very listenable and inoffensive to people of all ages, but its otherwise unclear why they're that much bigger than a band like "Five for Fighting" and i'd argue that a band like The Barenaked Ladies is actually capable of a lot more.

You make a great point. There's a lot of talk about how in the digital age everyone curates their own playlists. Hundreds of millions of personalized radio stations. The thing about pop music is it's sort of the only stuff everyone agrees upon. Like the greatest death metal band in history could emerge tomorrow and only 5 people are going to know about it.
Coldplay is one of those bands that made palatable quasi rock pop music that you can put on for someone of any age and they're likely to not hate it. Meanwhile if you put on Radiohead 10 people will say it's the greatest ever while most people won't like it. So I think we're simply living in an era where there's almost no crossover appeal unless you make songs for the masses and do it at a high level for a very long time.
I think perhaps the most interesting part is that Chris Martin despite dating Gwynnie has left virtually no cultural impact on society. I don't know anything about him nor anyone else who does. He's just sort of a vague bland white guy who sings good. Maybe that is the hero America needs. A guy who stands for nothing. Meanwhile we know everything about every Beatle and there are 4 million books on each one. But in the digital age it's better that it just be some faceless entity promoting the material that ends up on Pandora while you're browsing for products at the store. Peak soullessness.
