You can but it's not really necessary. Early on you will gain the ability to respec as often as you want for 100 gold, which becomes trivial relatively early.
So you can go with the traditional fighter, or anything really, early on.
What the poaster above was getting at is correct, but the OP build is 1 Cleric (War Domain), 3 Rogue (Thief), and the rest in Monk (Open Hand, but shadows can work). You can take these in any order. The reason this works is because of the changes that Larian make to monks versus 5e tabletop. Monks can wear armor and shields in BG3 and only lose their bonus speed, which is easily worked around.
The idea is that you max STR, CON, and WIS and ignore everything else. Low DEX doesn't matter because you can wear heavy armor and shields from cleric. War domain gives you extra attacks as class action a certain number of times per long rest. Thief gives you an extra bonus action which becomes incredibly powerful when you unlock your open hand bonus actions. Your ki also replenishes on short rest.
Take tavern brawler for your first feat, and round off STR. Then for your second feat, cap STR. In the meantime, buy every strength potion you can, as each one sets your STR to 21 until your next long rest. There are two ways to boost STR past 20, permanently, but I won't spoil those. One is in Act 2 and one is in Act 3.
This build is fully online later, near the end of Act 2, but is viable throughout. By level 10 you should have a 25 or so AC, dealing 20-30 damage with your fists, and attacking 6-7 times per turn without haste.
Other than that, some tips are, sleight of hand and persuasion are by far the most important soft skills. You'll want a balanced party but party composition is very flexible. I was an assassin until I discovered the monk build above. Now, I am that, and my other fighter respec'ed into a mirror of that. My other two companions are a cleric and a mage, they are more situational but valuable when they need to be.
If you take a mage, take divination as the specialty. You can make an argument for evoker but portent die are far more powerful. Also learn counterspell.
If you take the cleric that the game provides, you can respec her into a better cleric domain as trickery isn't very good.
The Dark Urge character is meant to be the canon character, and you will get more out of the story if you go with him - remember that he can be 100% customized, doesn't need to stay as a dragonborn sorceror.

The game is not difficult, not even close to DOS2's max setting. A simple pure fighter will destroy everything. Haste is the strongest effect in the game because it provides an extra action which, for a 11+ fighter, means 3 more attacks per round.
Stick to pure classes unless you know what you're doing. Fighter, Bard, Monk, Sorcerer, Warlock, Paladin, Ranger, Cleric are all powerful straight down the line. They obviously can get much more powerful with multiclassing but you need some understanding of the systems and classes.
If you're new to 5e, the key concepts to understand are (1) action economy, meaning utilizing your actions and bonus actions efficiently and maximizing your number of actions; and (2) advantage/disadvantage and the various ways to get it so you don't miss your attacks.

From a story perspective, Lae'zel is sort of the 'main' character, with major plot events particularly in Act 1 and Act 3. Keeping her around for the whole game can help you understand what's going on, and her character arc is incredible.
Shadowheart is second, having a significant relationship to a plot device in Act 1 and having a unique connection to most of what happens in Act 2.
For a first playthrough I think these two are essential for story purposes.

The game gives you one of each archetype basically right away.
Lae'zel is the fighter.
Shadowheart is the cleric.
Gale is the wizard.
Astarion is the rogue.
Just take the 3 you want (my feeling is that the Canon party is intended to be lae'zel, shadowheart, gale, and dark urge).

If you made it through DOS2 Act I on tactician then you don't need any tips for BG3. This game is much easier. Any class works, just focus on your damage and don't multiclass unless you know what you're doing (or are copying someone else's build).
For inventory management, keep healing potions, invis potions, and scrolls. You don't need arrows, poisons, or alchemy ingredients. Send all food to camp for long rests. You can also just send equipment to camp if you're unsure whether to keep or sell, or just dump everything on a strength character (nothing weighs too much except chest armor).
