Date: November 29th, 2024 5:19 PM Author: Sadistic locus in this case, turkey wants to weaken the syrian government so that it can't build alliances with the kurdish/northern factions during turkey's anticipated offensive into those regions. syria will be busy with the aleppo region and crippled otherwise, which also helps israel with respect to lebanon and the golan heights.
the syrian government has lost aleppo before without collapsing, and the lack of an offensive around damascus kind of implies a more regional strategy by turkey/NATO/israel. |

Date: November 29th, 2024 5:27 PM Author: Sadistic locus probably. one subtext here is that assad patched up the syrian government's diplomatic relations with china and saudi arabia in recent times, and that was seen as a hostile act by the US state department, since the official US goal is to isolate/sanction/overthrow assad.
part of this is the syrian government's fault for neglecting the northwestern front, which is why the offensive struck there in particular. it's also a good example of typical turkish backstabbery, since turks were the ones who pushed for the 2020 ceasefire in the first place, because erdogan was having trouble dealing with syrian migrants and their economic/social effects on his country.
but as soon as the border and other systems were toughened up, the old plan was put back into effect, and previous 'deals' were immediately and unilaterally torn up. it's generally foolish to trust or do business with turks for this reason. |
