FWIW, I'll give the prof the benefit of the doubt. I don't instantly recognize the name, and I easily buy the explanation that the name was in his head for some reason but didn't know where.
Then again, I am completely culturally unaware and generally poorly educated. But one of my life mottos is "Never attribute to malice that which can be equally well explained by incompetence."
I seriously think this was just a stupid mistake, as I cannot fathom a motivation for doing it intentionally.
