I began to see that those physicist conceits were wrong. I was meeting people as smart as anyone I knew in physics, and some of them had never even considered physics. I worked on nonphysics problems that fascinated me. Other preconceived notions proved false as well —for example, the idea that in physics you belong to a collegial community of scholars, with society quickly recognizing your contributions, while in finance you swim with the sharks, enduring backstabbing and greed. Or the idea that physics benefits society, while finance exploits widows and orphans. To the contrary, I found people in finance to be more supportive, and quicker to recognize contributions, than those in academia. I could also see much of the work in quantitative finance aimed at improving the lives of investors—that is, making a positive contribution to society, and one more concrete than anything in the recent history of physics. But these preconceived notions remain strong amongst some physicists. Years later, attending my 25th college reunion, I was shocked when I ran into a former physics undergraduate, now a physics professor, who told me he had heard that “I’d gone over to the dark side.”
