"We're doing trade, we're doing military, and it's absolutely fantastic," Trump said. "The American people will finally hold our enemies accountable, and that enemy is a place called China," he added.
Leading economists warned that such tariffs would destroy the U.S. economy and plunge the world into a depression, but White House officials dismissed the speculation.
Trump later announced that the tariffs would be delayed for 90 days.
