Senator

@JDVance1

says the Ukraine funding bill being rushed in the Senate will lead to the impeachment of President Trump if he were to win the presidency and tries to stop funding for Ukraine.

He writes, “I just sent the below memo to every one of my Republican colleagues in Congress.

“Buried in the bill’s text is an impeachment time bomb for the next Trump presidency if he tries to stop funding the war in Ukraine.

That doesn't seem legal and like it would require a constitutional amendment to fundamentally expand congress's power to regulate the executive branch.

You’re NGMI if your first argument against deep state bullshit is “that doesn’t seem legal”

I agree that it isn't dispositive at all and that they could effectively fuck the country over regardless.

there is no language in the bill automatically impeaching anyone. Vance is making the ridiculous argument that because the funding bill expires in sept 2025, potentially during trump's first term, and because trump said he would end the war in 24 hours if he were in office, democrats could now argue that trump should be impeached for violating the funding bill if he enters office and ends the war immediately. The depths of retardation that are necessary to believe such an argument are unfathomable.

Oh no, not “grounds for impeachment!”

Haven’t we learned the lesson? Impeachment is a purely political exercise of power. An opposition party with control of both houses can impeach for any or no reason and a party in power with control of either can stop impeachment for any or no reason. The justifications are just arguments of convenience.

The Founders believed that politicians would be men of principle with actual beliefs and a commitment to the larger national interest. Our current government has no use for the tools built for that fundamentally different society.

"The Founders believed that politicians would be men of principle with actual beliefs and a commitment to the larger national interest."

To be fair, the whole 2/3 senate vote thing might be recognition that they knew it could be abused as a political tool.

Are they saying Trump is going to use American foreign policy as leverage to go after his political opponents again this time? Weird argument.
