If the dems were smart, they'd come out with a completely rewritten plan on this topic and pitch it to moderates, while ignoring a fractional but disproportionately shrill part of their base's inevitable whining about losing the open borders spigot Unlimited immigration is obviously bad for a country especially one like the US and should be regarded as a misstep with blame given where blame is due (it doesn't lie entirely with the political class) but there are arguments for being moderately liberal wrt migrant acceptance rates to be made from the perspective of maintaining price levels and a standard of living that Americans are accustomed to*. There are completely fair and accurate arguments to be made that mass deportations would actually seriously harm supply chains, affordability of base goods, etc and these arguments don't even have to dip into neo-Keynesian or Marxist hypnobabble to be made. It would also force Trump to walk back some of his statements (always funny to watch, even as a con) or double down and potentially lose a bit of present support in trade off for a further rightwards shift of the Overton window later *this is a refreshing bit of honesty from politicians in and of itself but it would open the floor later for the sort of discussion I do think is important, pro-populist, and one that has been necessary for a long time |

It has always struck me as odd that libs, who many publications tell me are "theater kids", miss out on this obvious reach into the unreal performed for the purposes of establishing a political meta-narrative. We had 4 years of this guy; away from the media bubble, anyone actually watching the news of *events* and not just the commentaries on such (and the commentaries on the commentaries on such, and the commentaries on commentaries and commentaries on et al) saw that outside of the manufactured hype on both sides, the actual style of governance was fairly moderate (disappointingly so, depending on who you ask), lawful, and not at all of the apocalyptic fervor that many were claiming, predicting, or subconsciously desiring (http://www.autoadmit.com/thread.php?thread_id=5613470&forum_id=2#48210187) |
