There is a temple in Hokkaido. The snowdrifts swallow the stone steps. The path winds thin and mean through the pines. You find the temple by instinct alone. Inside, the men squat in silence. They have shaved their heads. Their hands are blistered. They have been awake for thirty-six hours, playing the Kyojin no Doshin: Kaihō Sensen Chibikko Chikko Daishūgō expansion. Their eyes are sunken. Their thumbs are raw. They are smiling.

The 64DD was not meant for you. It was never meant for you. You were always going to fail it. You were going to walk into a FuncoLand in 1999 and buy Turok: Rage Wars instead. You were going to run your hands along the plastic edges of the N64 display case, but you were never going to see the console with the soft blue disc. The one that needed a Randnet subscription. The one that came late, too late, and left too soon.

There are men in Shinjuku who wear masks when they play SimCity 64. Not medical masks, but lacquered ones. Black, with gold trim. They sit in cafes where you have never been. They talk about Miyamoto’s cancelled Cabbage project. They talk about EarthBound 64. They have played a fan build of it. There are only five copies. The build is unstable. It runs on frayed emulators. When they open it, it flickers. It hisses. The music loops over itself and the sky is wrong. They wander through the warped towns. They listen to the cursed notes. They see Lucas’s mother die again.

There is a man in Quebec who owns a DD. He will not let you touch it. He will not let you in the room. He plays F-Zero X Expansion Kit alone. He uses the track editor to build impossible courses. Curves with no ends. Ramps into voids. The track saves are unstable. He names them after real streets. Real towns. He erases them when he is done.

There is no 64DD forum. There is no marketplace. There is no Discord. You do not find it by searching. You find it by reading a thread on a thread on a thread. You find it by meeting a man with a scar on his thumb. He asks you what your first console was. You say N64. He looks disappointed. You try again. You say Sega Saturn. He nods. You are still not worthy, but you are close.

The 64DD players are the last of them. They are the men who waited for the modem that never came. They are the men who pre-ordered software that was never shipped. They burn discs that will not run. They run drives that will not load. They wear their exclusion like a scar.

The DD was too rare for this world. Too odd, too slow, too beautiful. You never held it in your hands. You never saw it hum. You will never be one of them.

I have a Satellaview that still receives transmissions from a system near Altair Prime.
