Sterling Sharpe was a very good receiver for a few years, but he didn't have anything close to a hall of fame career. He's 109th in career receiving yards, behind Eric Martin, Jeff Graham, and Ernest Givins, all of whom played in his era and none of whom are anywhere close to the hall of fame. Sterling Sharpe only got in because his brother, a borderline HOFer himself, is a notable and ever present sports talking head.

I guess kind of like Yao, Sterling's career was cut short because of injury. Yao played a total of 7 NBA seasons and only played in 60+ games in 4 of them. His best statistical seasons were 3 years where he barely played half the season. He didn't have a single full season where he put up numbers that rivaled other all time greats at his position.

I'm admittedly not a NFLmo, but Sterling's stats are pretty impressive. 7 full seasons all solid stats with 5 of those being Randy Moss, TO, Jerry Rice type numbers. I think you can argue that Sterling Sharpe proved he was a HOF caliber player much more so than Yao did. Of course, the history books are filled with talented athletes whose potential was never fully realized because of injury, so sure neither likely deserves induction.

tbf, he *is* one of the most famous players of all time and it's an obviously good business move.
