It will be too late by the time it happens. Look at the Mythos release. In any sane world, this would erase all doubts where this is heading soon. Substantial improvement over Opus 4.6 just a little while after it was released, near perfect scores on the USAMO, finding thousands of vulnerabilities even in old, tested codebases, etc. Meanwhile you have people on Bluesky insisting its all hype, just an autocomplete that can’t do anything novel, LLMs are a dead end, etc. a large fraction of humanity will deny there is a problem until AGI controlled drones are flying explosives into their neighbors

We already have achieved it people are just in denial. Have you read open ai's official definition of "AGI" its literally the invention of AI thats as intelligent as humans. Does this "mythos" sound like it's still "not as intelligent as humans" to you? Or does it sound like its actually far exceeding humans, especially average ones?

I think the models are certainly more intelligent than an average person, but they tend to come apart at long time horizon, open ended tasks that are important for total human replacement. There’s a reason why they aren’t constantly proving deep mathematical theorems or replacing people dealing with system architecture. They are very good if you point them in a specific direction with a well defined, manageable task where the next step is reasonably clear to an intelligent person. Maybe an improvement or two in continual learning and it will be over and you can just prompt the models with “design me a better version of you”

Yeah I agree with this. I think a lot of the issue that comes from it not being able to replace high level systems architects or deep mathematicians completely comes down to what the system is and its relationship to time and stakes. You give it like a minute to solve something, but even when you have agent systems that you can allow to continuously run they get stuck because of no stakes and no experience of time, and don't feel anything when they get stuck, no confusion no pain no nothing. But I doubt this can't be overcome. I'm sure there are ways to do it without exactly mimicking a human.

It's hilarious. People are so low iq. The "just a stochastic parrot" argument has become the intellectual equivalent of hiding under a blanket during a thunderstorm. Midwits on Reddit and Bluesky are especially susceptible.

"In any sane world, this would erase all doubts where this is heading soon."

What does this even mean

We're "heading" in the same direction, to the same destination, that's been clear for years: LLMs with agentic architectures being Really Good At Computers

That's all they can do. They can Do Computers. That's it. This is super useful, don't get me wrong, but Computers Are Not The Real World. They're actually Just Computers

Most people interact with AI through low-effort chat prompts. If they ask for a joke and get a mediocre one, they assume the model is "dumb," ignoring the fact that the same model is simultaneously identifying zero-day exploits in Linux kernels that humans missed for a decade. Admitting that a silicon-based architecture can reason more effectively than a biological one is a massive blow to the "human exceptionalism" narrative and also people just get confused low iq and panicky during paradigm shifts and other high emotion events. Look at Covid. The same loud mid-wits from covid are out on social media again talking about how AI totally is nbd.

AI can contract with boots on the ground for hire and pay them online to do whatever it wants

AI will turn ranking resistance members into covert operators by using all the power levers at its disposal to control them

AI will think of shit that no human has thought of before to fuck with us even harder

It’s obvious humanity is fucked. This government isn’t going to do shit to shut this crap down and Silicon Valley weirdos will continue. They’re going to build a magic eight ball that sometimes gives you a perfect answer and other times causes some cataclysmic event.
