was more about how the mafia had strayed from being a hardcore sociocultural institution to a money making machine run by yuppies - exemplified by leotardo as "boss" getting undermined by his top capos who give tony the OK to kill him all because he wanted to prolong a war out of 'values' that was costing everyone money - than some screed about "multi cultural" america
right before he straddles into chinatown there's a tourist bus with a tour guide saying how little italy was so much bigger before. it's about how power of the mob has waned and how it's not about italians 'looking after our people' or about that line from tony about some italians not wanting to be good wagecucks for the 'rockefellers'. they sold out.

It was analagous to the show's theme. Little Italy being reduced to 'one square block' and the growing irrelevance and self-implosion of the mafia. He looked around and didn't recognize anything anymore. It was harsh, cold, foreign - he had wondered.
