If the kid is 5 or less maybe depending on how long the flight is and the people sitting next to the kid in the aisle/window (are they fat? smelly?) out of sheer empathy. But even here you wouldnt have do it. Families can book earlier or pay more to sit together.

But my kids were at least 7 years old, able to be self-sufficient, and just sat in their assigned seats, we didn't ask anyone to move.

Airlines could easily solve this problem by first, just not letting you book seats in a configuration where children under some age (like 8 or so) are isolated.

And if they have to rebook you due to a cancellation or delay, they should not be able to seat the young kids alone, and should have to just bump other passengers into middle seats (with compensation) if needed.

the person in my seat (ie me) should deal with the FA and not the mom. I should be given some sort of compensation if forced to move so that the minor can sit with the adult thorugh no fault of my own.

And we all are aware that I most likely had to pay in some form for the seat that I chose.

Someone has to eat some shit here and it shouldnt be me who was inconveniently seated next to someone, in the best case scenario, who was rebooked.

the hypo is a NYC to LA flight. how often is that flight a leg from a different journey? how often is this a flight where people are connecting or didn't have the opportunity to pay for seats to begin with? even if she is on this flight because her intended flight got fucked for some reason she still could have gone to the gate agent and said "um hi can you make sure i'm sitting with my kid?" which would be easy since presumably many other people would have be rescheduled to that flight too.
